Nearly 1,000 Atlantans came out to witness Gold Medal action as Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser serves it up at Red Bull Spiked: Atlanta.
Fourteen of the southeast’s finest co-ed beach volleyball teams competed in a series of grueling qualifiers today at Piedmont Park in hopes of going face-to-face with Olympic gold medalists, Todd Rogers and Phil Dalhausser, at Red Bull Spiked. The twist on this game was that the teams taking on the dynamic duo were comprised of two men and two women – two verses four.
The 14 teams took to the sand courts in the Active Oval at Piedmont Park in a round robin format competition until there were only two left standing. And the two teams to go up against the pair just so happened to be from the same hometown – Deerfield Beach, Florida.
“[Todd and Phil] are nuts!” says team captain Ossie Barreras from the winning Deerfield Beach team. “It was a lot of fun. You never get a chance like this.” While our world champions claimed overall victory, it was Ossie’s team that beat out their hometown rivals by only one point – 43 to 42.
Qualifying tournaments were held in six cities – Tampa, FL, Wilmington, NC, Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Nashville, TN, Atlanta, GA and Orlando, FL – with the top two teams making the trip to the ATL to compete in the finals. Since Atlanta is home turf, four teams were selected for a total of 14 co-ed foursomes competing at Red Bull Spiked.
“The competition was fierce,” explains Todd Rogers. “Obviously, we almost lost there. The teams were really solid. Florida came to the plate.” While Todd and Phil might have gold medals and world championship wins under their belt, today’s competition was anything but easy for them. The four on two format kept every athlete on their toes and the audience waiting in anticipation for who would score the next point.
