Just two short weeks before the horrific 8.9 earthquake rocked Japan, Sebastien Toutant (aka Seb Toots) traveled across the globe to compete in the Toyota Big Air, one of the world’s most prestigious big air events, in Sapporo, Japan.
Over 15,000 fans crowded the stadium to watch Seb and fellow Red Bull rider Mark McMorris go for broke. Seb busted out a new trick that he’d been working on - a double backside rodeo 1080.
Seb stomped the trick and placed second to earn a cool 1.3 million yen! Although all eyes have been affixed on the Japanese region following the tsunami, I had a chance to catch up with Seb after his safe return to find out what this trick was all about - thankfully his trick reminded me of some great times in Japan in light of all the horror.
The double backside rodeo 1080. Is this a brand new trick for you Seb?
Yes, I learned it at the Air & Style event in Munich, Germany.
How long did it take before you stomped the trick in competition?
I was doing double BS rodeo 900s and I was trying for 1080 melon grabs but it was always too hard to land. At the Air & Style in Munich, I tried it like Travis Rice (melon grab to handy grab) and I landed it first try.
You landed it a couple times at the Toyota Big Air and the fans went crazy. Is this a regular contest trick for you now?
It's still a new trick for me so it's not as consistent as my other double cork tricks but I'm always stoked to do it in contest. It is a really impressive trick for the fans to see.
At what other contests have you landed this trick?
Toyota Big Air was my first contest that I tried it. I would like to do more in contests next year.
What is the next progression of this trick for you?
I would like to do the same trick switch, and also spinning to 1260.
Looking back, what was the highlight of your season?
Winning the slopestyle gold at X Games.
[Ed. Note: Seb hit the RIDE Shakedown last weekend (April 1-2) in Quebec and left with the victory, handily spinning a Cab double cork 1260 to seal the deal. Looks like we're in store for an even more amazing season out of Sebastien in '11/'12...]
