Travis Rice can do it all. The pro snowboarder has won multiple X Games medals (including two gold). He has outrun avalanches, made groundbreaking films and even kept Conan O’Brien on his toes.
His latest achievement? Acting as Snow Mentor for disadvantaged inner city children.
On March 25, Travis joined 35 Los Angeles children at Snow Summit in Big Bear, California, on behalf of Stoked, an agency that promotes personal development, academic achievement, and healthy living to under-served youth through action sports culture in New York and Los Angeles.
“We’re thrilled to have Travis Rice join the bus and snowboard with our kids,” said Steve Larosiliere, the president of Stoked. “Having the top snowboarder in the world share his passion for snowboarding and life lessons learned makes a tremendous impact for our kids.”
“It was an epic day,” said Travis in a video documenting the day. “It was sunny, the perfect amount of soft snow. This was the last trip of the season for Stoked Snow, and this was my first time being here involved with the program. I was pretty blown away by how much the kids have progressed. [For] some of them it was their second time or their fourth time or for a few, their first time.”
As Snow Mentor, Rice engaged with the youths, passing on life lessons through the process of learning to snowboard. “I think it’s really a huge thing when people are able to put themselves in uncomfortable situations,” Travis said. “That’s when you really learn who you are. You learn about yourself. To put yourself out there and go ride for the day and focus on the current, the present, the now. These kids have so much to take from a day like that.”
Stoked MentoringStoked was founded in 2005 by Larosiliere and Sal Masekela, the action sports TV host. Right now, Stoked is looking for intermediate to advanced skateboarders to serve as mentors. Check out the website stoked.org for more details.
