"It's amazing," said Dany Torres, the defending Red Bull X-Fighters World Champion. "This is the first time I've ever jumped on a beach like this. It's great to see so many people here."
Torres, pictured below with a new friend, and some of the world's best freestyle motocross riders took to the air at Venice Beach, California, for a special Red Bull X-Fighters demo ahead of Saturday's event at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino. The return of the FMX World Tour to U.S. soil for the first time since 2009 is a fitting one, touching down in the Southern California region where the sport was born.
Torres, a Spaniard, was especially enamored with the prototypical SoCal location. "It's different, especially to see all the girls wearing only bikinis," he said. "It's good for the eyes."
Jörg Mitter/Red Bull Media House North America, Inc.Torres will have to forget the bikinis and stay focused on Saturday at Glen Helen, where the second stop of the 2012 Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour kicks off at 2:00 p.m. PST. Torres finished eighth at the first event in Dubai in April, so he’ll have to ride wide open if he hopes to retain his title.
Speaking of wide open, the course at Glen Helen is officially the largest in tour history, with more options available to the competitors at one location than ever before. The course covers 225,000 square feet, nearly two-and-a-half times the size of the next-largest Red Bull X-Fighters venue. The huge layout may shake up the standings as the riders will be challenged to ride this event unlike any of the others. Regardless of who takes the top spot, it’s guaranteed we’ll see the most amazing tricks in FMX as the entire field fights for the win.
Tickets are still available, including special Camp & Ride and/or Ticket to Ride passes that put you on the track with two-time Supercross champ James Stewart (from 8 to 9 a.m.). Gates open for all other ticket holders at 9:00 a.m. and the early birds will be treated to autograph sessions, trials riding demos, tons of giveaways and more.
