Red Bull Manny Mania is either genius or madness, or a little bit of both.
Born from the mind of skateboard pro Joey Brezinski, Red Bull Manny Mania is a global competition based solely on one trick, the manual, which involves skating on only the two front wheels or the two back wheels.
The contest is open to amateur skaters, who compete in regional events held in 12 countries on five continents, from Argentina to South Africa. Winners earn a ticket to New York City for the Red Bull Manny Mania World Final in August.
In the United States, nine regional qualifiers will be held and the best will be sent to the National Final at Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania, where they will face off to see who represents the U.S. in the World Final.
The winner of the World Final will quickly step into the big leagues, earning a spot to compete in the invite-only Pro event the next day. Entering into its sixth year, the invite-only pro event has brought some of the best skaters to NYC, including Brezinski, Ronnie Creager and Eli Reed (all past winners).
And if you think an amateur stands no chance against skateboarding’s elite, think again: Last year’s amateur champ, Sewa Kroetkov, from the Netherlands, came in second overall in the Pro session.
