On the eve of X Games 17, X Games correspondent Sal Masekela hosted a press event at L.A. Live, gathering some of action sports’ gnarliest: Travis Pastrana, Ryan Sheckler, Ashley Fiolek, Shaun White, Jamie Bestwick, Bob Burnquist, Tanner Foust and Pierre-Luc Gagnon were all on the elite guest list. The light-hearted discussions ranged but most of the topics were about each athlete and their respective sport.
X Games 17 Press Conference Highlights
Travis Pastrana: Just when you think there’s no way that Pastrana can top himself, he does. The buzz at the press event centered around Pastrana’s X Games 17 weekend. Not only is he going to compete in three X Games events (Moto X Best Trick, Moto X Freestyle and Rallycross), Pastana is going to debut at the NASCAR Nationwide circuit at the Kroger 200. Here’s Pastrana’s weekend schedule: Thursday and Friday compete in X Games, fly out to Indianapolis for NASCAR on Saturday, then fly back to Los Angeles to close out the weekend at Rallycross in X Games. F’ing nuts.
Ryan Sheckler: As is always the case, the press loves talking about Ryan Sheckler’s past. As in Sheckler being the youngest gold medalist in X Games’ sordid history. Sheckler laughed it off, declaring that the only real difference between himself and his competitors is his height, and announcing that his goal is to take home another gold in Skateboard Street.
Ashley Fiolek: The only female and the only deaf competitor on the panel, questions directed towards Ashley Fiolek touched on both subjects. In response to a question about Fiolek’s difficulties overcoming her deafness on the track, she smiled and signed her response to the translator. “No challenges are insurmountable.” After all, she does hold back-to-back gold medals in Women’s Super X. The press applauded her answer. It was an emotional Rudy moment. Trust us, you just had to be there.
