X Games 17 Rally Course

Think Carmageddon was bad? The scheduled bridge demolition on LA's 405 freeway ain’t got nuthin’ on X Games 17.

In previous years, X Games had split up the summer event in Los Angeles into multiple venues to accommodate for the scale and number of competitions. Good luck trying to fit the Moto X Freestyle course, Skateboard Street park and BMX Freestyle Big Air ramp all inside the STAPLES Center.

Since Rally Car Racing’s induction into the X Games in 2006, the first four years saw the automotive competition held at the Home Depot Center sports complex. Last year, with the move from the Home Depot Center to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, fully prepped race cars stormed up and down the former Olympic stadium in Rally Car Racing and Rallycross, a second vehicular discipline. This year, things are going to be a bit different.

Thanks to X Games’ effort to consolidate the event into one sprawling venue, X Games 17 will be held in its entirety at LA Live, hijacking the STAPLES Center, Nokia Theater and the local streets.

The streets, as you can probably guess, will play host to both rally competitions. Meaning this year, the cars are leaving the sheltered confines of a closed environment and taking their battle into the city, around buildings, traffic signals, painted lines, crosswalks and all. All of which, will be closed off (naturally) for the weekend. For Formula One fans, think of it as a mini Los Angeles GP.

The entire course won’t be asphalt. This is rally, after all. Dirt will be hauled in and the notoriously huge X Games jump will return—52 feet of it, this year. Parking Lot 7, normally reserved for parking for the STAPLES Center and other local attractions, will have the honor of housing the jump, as well as the Big Air ramp. A section of Figueroa Street will be closed. Check out the course renderings for details.
