While practicing for the Moto X Speed Speed & Style competition inside Staples Center on Saturday afternoon, longtime Red Bull FMX athlete Robbie Maddison went down hard on the track’s challenging whoop section, and unfortunately left the arena with a collapsed lung, a couple broken ribs, and a laceration on his right leg.
Speed & Style was the only event on Maddo’s X Games schedule, and the talented Australian was no doubt among the heavy favorites heading into the evening. Dropping extremely quick lap times early on, everything was looking promising for Maddison as he railed around the circuit aboard his brand-new JWR Kawasaki. Soon thereafter, however, disaster struck as he dropped his front wheel between two of the square-edged whoops toward the end of the section, and went over the bars before being pile-drived by his own bike.
Maddo was transported to a local Los Angeles area hospital for further evaluation on Saturday evening, and initial reports of a compound fracture of his right tibia and fibula were thankfully incorrect.
“Thanks for all the well wishes everyone," Maddison said via Twitter late Saturday night. "I just woke up in a lot less pain. Broken ribs and punctured lung. Leg is all good.”
Javier Villegas of Chili took Maddo's place in Speed & Style, but it was Mike Mason who eventually earned the gold medal ahead of Nate Adams in the two-rider final.
