On September 8 at the Roseland Theatre in Portland, OR, music fans at Musicfest NW will experience something never-before-seen on a concert stage: a back-to-back-to-back performance from Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh and J Mascis. The groundbreaking show serves as the pilot for Red Bull Common Thread, a new music series dedicated to putting multiple iterations of bands with shared members on a single stage on one night. In a landscape where musical groups commonly have members explore projects outside of their original lineup, Red Bull Common Thread serves as conduit to bring them all together and celebrate both their similarities and their differences. For the first Red Bull Common Thread, the familial lineage is based off of progenitor Dinosaur Jr. and offshoots J Mascis (solo project of front man J Mascis) and Sebadoh (a three-man group featuring bassist Lou Barlow).
Dinosaur Jr. is widely recognized as one of the most significant American rock bands of all time. Preceding Nirvana by several years, Dinosaur Jr. was instrumental in bringing the crashing sounds of lead guitar back to indie rock. Comprised of singer/guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, the band’s signature metallic haze and excellent songwriting has led to their first three albums, Dinosaur, You're Living All Over Me and Bug, being considered cult masterpieces. The original line-up re-formed in 2005 for select live dates, and released Beyond in 2007 and Farm in 2009 (on the band’s new label, Jagjaguwar). A third album with the reunited original lineup is due in early Fall 2012 on Jagjaguwar. visit website
After leaving Dinosaur Jr., bassist Lou Barlow teamed up with Eric Gaffney in 1988 with the plan to make lo-fi four-track recordings under the name Sebadoh. The duo made two albums, Weed Forestin and The Freed Man, finally releasing Sebadoh III in 1991, written by Lou, Eric and newest recruit, bassist Jason Loewenstein. In 1993, Eric left and was replaced by drummer and friend Bob Fay, for two albums, Bakesale and Harmacy. In 2004, Lou and Jason embarked on the “Turbo Acoustic” tour, and in 2007, the three original members of Sebadoh – Eric, Lou and Jason – reunited and performed together with dates in the US, Canada and Europe. Now joined by drummer Bob D’Amico (Fiery Furnaces, Circle of Buzzards), the band is currently working on new material and intend on releasing a new, full-length album – their first in 14 years – in 2013. visit website
When Dinosaur Jr. disbanded in 1991, J Mascis released “More Light,” under the moniker J Mascis + The Fog. With its revolving line-up of stellar musicians J Mascis + The Fog continues to churn out new material and tour. Members and collaborators of The Fog have included Mike Watt (Minutemen / fIREHOSE), Ron Asheton (The Stooges), Robert Pollard (Guided By Voices), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) Dave Schools (Stockholm Syndrome/Widespread Panic) and Kyle Spence (Harvey Milk). J Mascis also performs solo acoustic shows, proving that there are truly no limitations to his abilities. Sub Pop Records released Mascis’ debut solo acoustic album, Several Shades of Why, on March 15, 2011. visit website
