Red Bull EmSee: The Road to 8 Mile is a freestyle rap battle of sight and sound, directed and spearheaded by the freestyle master himself, Eminem. This invitation-only competition has a unique format that challenges competitors to bring their game face to the chopping block and take it back to basics.
Emcees will not only battle head-to-head against each other but also against the clock and their mind’s eye when they are tested to drop the sickest flows they can based on spontaneous cues. In this bracketed, elimination style competition, the emcees will be judged based on three rounds, each with different challenges. The fight for the national championship begins with eight contenders. In the first round, emcees will be tested on their versatility and speed as they’re given five images at random to base their freestyles on. The four winners from that round will have to keep on their toes for round two as they’ll rap about themes that are texted in by the judges and the live audience to a screen. And the two who prove themselves above the rest and make it to the final round, will go head-to-head in a traditional freestyle battle.
The national finals competition begins with eight competitors -- four will advance to the second round, with the top two advanceing to the finals -- one winner will be left standing.
Round 1: VISUALS -- Five random images are shown on the screen. MCs are given 60-seconds to freestyle incorporating as many images as possible.
Round 2: TEXTS -- Judges and live audience text words to the screens and MCs have to incorporate the words into their freestyle.
Round 3: HEAD TO HEAD -- Last two MCs standing go head to head, the illest MC wins.
The competitors include:
- DNA (New York)
- Nocando (San Francisco)
- Philly Swain (Philadelphia)
- Jonny Storm (Orlando)
- Killa Chris (Greensboro, NC)
- Phranchyze (Houston)
- Headkrack (Atlanta)
- Fowl (Detroit)
“I’m looking for somebody to stand out, to be unique and to say the sickest, most ridiculous, most retarded s#%! you can say, something that makes somebody want to quit,” explained Eminem. To hear what else he has to say about battle rapping check out: Red Bull Emsee: The Road to 8 Mile.
