- About this Image
- On Sunday, October 14, Austrian pilot and skydiver Felix Baumgartner completed the final manned flight of the Red Bull Stratos mission. He was lifted inside a space capsule by a helium balloon into the stratosphere. At an altitude of 128,097 feet above sea level, Baumgartner jumped into a free fall, achieving Mach 1.24 (or 834 mph) in descent. He landed safely in the New Mexico desert. In the process, Baumgartner set three world records: top speed in free fall (breaking the speed of sound), free fall from the highest altitude and highest manned balloon flight.
