Alysia Montaño excels in a notoriously difficult Track and Field event: the 800 meters. In addition to three U.S. National championships and a World Indoor bronze, the runner known for wearing a flower in her hair has won two NCAA titles and was the world’s fastest woman in the 800 meters for 2010.

“The 800 meters is considered to be the ‘longest sprint’: to succeed you have to find the perfect balance of both anaerobic and aerobic fitness,” says Alysia, who set numerous records during her collegiate career at UC Berkeley and was named Pac-10 Women’s Track Athlete of the Year.

“The race is long enough that pace is important, but short enough that there’s no time for fear,” she continues. “So you just have to be fearless.”

After a strategic “building block” season in 2011 that saw her collect additional podium hardware despite a reduced competition schedule, Alysia is accelerating toward her dream of running at the 2012 Olympics.
