If you’re looking for surfing’s next superstar look no further: Jordy Smith shares a birthday with surfing legend Kelly Slater – and he looks set to be the sport’s new dominant force. Smith established himself as one of the world’s best up-and-coming surfers in 2003 when he won the Quicksilver ISA World Junior Championships in his home town of Durban, South Africa. In 2007 at the age of 19, Smith won the World Qualifying Series, the second tier tour, and has taken that form into the ASP World Tour, where he has established himself as one of the most daring, innovative and most flexible competitors – despite his 188cm (6ft, 2in) frame.
In only his second year on the tour, Smith pulled a rodeo flip on a trip to Indonesia with the Red Bull surf team. The move is regarded as the most high-performance maneuver ever executed on a wave, and it earned him Web Clip of the Year honors in the 2009 SURFER Poll. It seems surfing runs in the blood, as well: Jordy’s sister Casey is South Africa’s top ranked female junior surfer.
