Digits have changed. So, too, have the drivers. But Red Bull Racing Team’s No. 4 Toyota is the same twin to the No. 83 that first started in 2006.
The car debuted late in the 2006 Cup season. AJ Allmendinger, after moving to NASCAR from Champ Car, had hoped to race at Atlanta. Rain robbed him of that, and the No. 84 — a Dodge carrying the colors of the New York Red Bulls soccer team — took to the track for the first time a week later at Texas. The car qualified dead last the same day Brian Vickers, in his third-to-final race in the No. 25, took the pole with a track-record lap.
The No. 84 unloaded for its first full-time season in February 2007 and failed to qualify for the first four races. It didn’t turn its first green-flag laps until March 25 at Bristol, where Allmendinger started 43rd and finished 40th. The team made only 17 of 36 races that year but showed signs of improvement with 15th- and 16th-place finishes at Charlotte and Atlanta to close the season.
The 2008 season had a similar start, and veteran Mike Skinner was called upon for five races to help the team get up to speed. Allmendinger returned in April at Talladega (also the debut of the silver paint scheme) and went on to earn the No. 84’s first top 10 at Indianapolis. The No. 84’s best finish was ninth at Kansas, also Allmendinger’s final race with the team. Fellow Californian Scott Speed, a former driver for Red Bull’s Scuderia Toro Rosso Formula One team, took over for four races. Even Vickers drove the car in the Homestead finale to ensure its place in the top 35 in car owner points.
With the rookie Speed as its driver, the No. 84 switched to 82 for the 2009 season. The car’s first top five came nine races in at Talladega, but Speed managed only two top 10s throughout the remainder of 2009 and all of 2010.
This season, the car has Kasey Kahne for a driver and carries the No. 4 — a symbol of Kahne’s sprint car efforts. The road crew is made up of many of Kahne’s colleagues from the No. 9 team, while the over-the-wall pit crew continues to remain intact.
