Robinson Earns 8th X Games Medal
Kevin Robinson has the consistency game down; he's medaled at least once at every X Games since 2003, and he kept it going in 2008 with a bronze in Big Air. He's taken gold in the event for the past two years and could have played it safe this year, but that's just not the way K-Rob does it. As he's said many times in the past, "I'm either going to win or go down in flames."
He grabbed the glory in a big way this year, going for record-setting flairs at over 20 feet! Timing the spin when you're in the air for what seems like 10 minutes is a tricky thing though, and a slight over-rotation had him sliding out on the massive transition. Again, he could have played it safe in run two, but instead he opted to go for two insane tricks that had never been attempted before in Big Air competition. He landed a clean and extremely difficult no-handed 360 over the cavernous 50-foot gap, then shot up the 27-foot quarter and twisted a perfect no-handed 540 at almost 13 feet out. Robinson made history with both tricks, and added yet another X Games medal to his collection.
Robinson Top Five on AST Tour
After checking out the ESPY awards in Los Angeles on July 16th, Kevin Robinson hopped a flight to Cleveland for the second stop of the AST Tour (K-Rob was an ESPY nominee for Best Male Action Sports Athlete; the award ended up going to his Red Bull teammate Shaun White). Once he hit the vert ramp, he dug into his bag of tricks and brought out his classic switch-handed 540, no-handed and opposite flairs, and nailed a hairy 540 tailwhip transfer into the larger 15-foot section of the halfpipe.
He was set to thrash his competitors in his second run when he landed with his weight off-center and had a rare washout at the bottom of the ramp. K-Rob doesn't go out like that, so he marched back up to the deck, dropped in and threw a crazy double flair attempt just for the rowdy crowd. He finished sixth for the day, but maintains a top-five standing on the Tour's overall Vert standings.
Next up for Kevin is the X Games in Los Angeles, where he'll be defending his two consecutive Big Air gold medals, as well as competing in his 12th consecutive X Games Vert comp (he earned bronze in the event in 2007).
