A rain spell hit the port town of Ensenada, Mexico this past weekend and muddied up the wash that the competitors run down as they begin the most famous desert race this side of the world, the SCORE Baja 1000. But the rain couldn´t dampen anyone´s spirits, and thousands turned up for Contingency, a technical inspection of each race machine on Monday. The racers and their vehicles lined the streets for the process, which added to the anticipation of the start of the race.

Tuesday began with a bright Mexico sun rising as the motorcycles and ATVs began their race at 6:30 a.m. Pacific Time. Class 22 competitor Steve Hengeveld will try to make this running his sixth overall win in a row (and seventh career win) when he takes over for the last leg of the race into Cabo San Lucas.

Three hours after the final motorcycles and ATVs leave the starting line, the cars and trucks depart, with 2006 Baja 1000 Trophy Truck champion Andy McMillin, CORR racer Steve Barlow and accomplished drifter Rhys Millen all competing.

More to come as these amazing racers will face the grueling terrain and exhaustion that the next 1,296 miles throw at them. Stay tuned!
