05/21/2008: Philadelphia
The “city of brotherly love” kicked off the 2008 Red Bull Big Tune Tour - the nation’s premiere music producer program. Twelve aspiring beatsmiths took the stage at Fillmore at The Theater of Living Arts – packed deep with nearly 800 audience members – in the first of eight regional competitions. “Ill Mind” of New Jersey was crowned the winner and “Ritz”- a Philadelphia native, earned runner up.
05/29/2008: Oakland
12 of the Bay area's finest up-and-coming beat conductors battled for the hearts of over 600 music lovers
at The Historic Sweets Ballroom in Oakland, Calif. during
the second stop of the Red Bull Big Tune 2008 national tour. In the final battle, Oakland native "Marc Garvey," overtook crowd favorite --"Hitmaker" from Tracy, Calif. with his gritty, pounding rhythms and trembling bass. Both producers advance to the national finals.
Legendary Hip Hop music producer and Oakland native Rick Rock got the crowd bumpin' during a special showcase where he took the audience on a musical journey of some of his platinum hits including Change the Game (Jay Z), Yay Area & Gasoline (E-40). In keeping with the local spirit, Bay Area rapper Turf Talk who is at the forefront of the hyphy movement brought the crowd to a fever pitch with his distinctive flow and signature style.
6/25/2008: Houston
An audience of 800 plus fans packed Venue on Main Street as twelve aspiring beat artists competed in this southern regional qualifier. “Sound Mob”, local Houston duo, took top prize and “EQ” first female producer in Red Bull Big Tune history, a Houston native, was runner u p.“We are so proud because we fulfilled a mission. This was something we set out to do. It was our goal from last year. We are just excited that we won...hard work pays off,” said Sound Mob.
Featured producer Mr. Lee, emcee Willie D of the Geto Boys and special guest DJ Michael Watts of Swisha House were Part of the Red Bull Big Tune program includes educating the next generation of music producers. Prior to the beat battle, event creators Vitamin D, Jake One, and Jonathan Moore hosted an intimate music workshop for a handful of young musicians from The Urban Zone in Sharpstown Center.
The crew demonstrated the art of creating beats and discussed business tips for entering and navigating the music industry.
