The preliminary tryouts were held in and around the New York area (Manhattan, Queens, Newark) in January 2006. They were open to all participants who meet the eligibility requirements.

At the tryouts, candidates were critiqued by an elite panel of judges on:
- skills
- attitude
- personality
- creativity
- style
