After his success at the Asian X Games, 22 year old Venezuelan Daniel Dhers is intent on another good showing at the Summer X Games, where he came third last year. In this interview, “DD” talks about his perfect run in Shanghai, his first time on a BMX bike and, er, his missing spoke wrench.

Congratulations on your win at the Asian X Games, Daniel! What was your most remarkable achievement in Shanghai?

I think my second run was better than my first. I had already won the contest in the first round but I always try to beat my score, so I focussed again and went for it!

You’re a Tour overall winner and the LG Action Games winner. What else should the world know about “DD”?

I’m a simple person, pretty shy until you get to know me. I always try to improve on and off my bike. I read a lot.

Is it true you know the exact date that you started BMX-ing?

February 4th 1998. That’s the day I rode my first ramp. I remember it because I did my membership for the skatepark the next day and that day it was printed. I was a member for a few years, so I remember it to this day.

You’re from Venezuela, but you now live in the US. What made you move – and what do you miss most about your homeland?

I started coming to the States because of riding. I might end up making the final decision to move here by the end of this year, but we’ll see. I miss my family a lot, the food, my friends, but it’s all good. I’ve been having fun over here!

The X Games will take place from August 2 to 5 in Los Angeles. What’s the difference between this contest and the one in Shanghai, and what are the chances of you winning there?

The Summer X Games it’s a way bigger deal, it’s like the Olympics for us. Shanghai is pretty big, but Summer X has more history so it’s more important. They only invite the top 10 in our sport and any of us has the chance to win, so it’s not easy by any means.

Tell us about the tricks you’re working on right now ...

You’ll see them at the contest, don’t worry…..lol.

According to your blog you’re looking for someone who stole your spoke wrench. Have you got it back yet?

Yeah, my friend Mike Spinner “borrowed it” and forgot to return it, but he gave it back to me because he knew he was going to be in deep trouble!
