3 Down, 2 to Go
With two wins already under his belt on the 2008 AST Tour, Daniel Dhers went into the third stop in Portland with a target on his back. Once again, everyone missed the mark as Daniel turned in one of his best contest runs yet for win number three. He's the only athlete on the tour to remain undefeated this season, and is on track to be the first ever to win all five events and earn his third consecutive overall title.
Some dirty hooligans stole Daniel's backpack the night before the contest, and his nemesis Mike Spinner landed a 1080 and a quadruple tailwhip in the same run, but Daniel simply couldn't be shaken. He calmly dropped trick after trick, unleashing a 60-second barrage of the biggest moves in the business. He also unveiled his latest variation, a wild can-can 720, then put on a 720 demo in his second run after he had sealed up the win.
Daniel heads into the Salt Lake City stop next month with a comfortable points lead and a handful of new tricks still under wraps. With three AST wins and an X Games gold medal already in his trophy case this season, he's simply dominating the contest scene, and no one's catching up. Check him out in SLC to get schooled on how the BMX game is played.
Dhers Wins 2nd X Games Gold
Daniel Dhers took a big win in BMX Park at X Games in 2007, but the event was morphed into SuperPark for 2008. Some weren't sure if Daniel could adapt to the course, which featured deep bowls, tight corners, and elusive lines, but he hasn't racked up countless wins for nothing – Daniel's got crazy skills on a bike, no matter what course you drop him into. He breezed through the elimination round, finishing a full 14 points ahead of his closest competitor. While everyone else was still trying to find their way around the course and squeeze out a trick or two, Daniel was dropping bombs back-to-back.
All eyes were on him in the final, waiting to see if his armor would crack. No chance; he fired out double whip transfers into the top section of the course, no-footed can-can to late tailwhip 360s and his signature 720s over the spine, a 540 tailwhip, and a crazy double tailwhip transfer out of the bowled end of the spine. Once again, he trounced the other riders by more than ten points, taking his second X Games gold medal in a row. He's been to X Games three times, and he's got three medals – look for number four next year.
Event
On July 20, 2008, Daniel Dhers nailed the winning run in Park at stop two of the AST Tour, making him two for two after his win at the opening event in June. Dhers, who has won the Tour's overall Park title two years in a row, came out swinging in his first run to leave no doubt about his dominance.
He turned it up to eleven under the shadow of Cleveland's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, spinning no less than four 720s on his own two wheels of steel. He dropped a new no-handed version of his corked 720 for '08, adding an x-up 720 and a straight seven over the spine in his run in Cleveland. Add a clean no-handed flair and a couple of his trademark no-footed can-cans to late tailwhips, and that was all he needed to take home the first-place bucks – he didn't even have to spin a double tailwhip to shut down Mike Spinner and his quad whip.
Dhers rolls into stop three of the AST Tour in Portland on August 21 with a 40-point lead over Spinner, but not before attacking the X Games SuperPark course in Los
Angeles on August 1st. He already holds two X Games Park medals: bronze from '06 and gold from '07.
