The tall champion from Switzerland was soaked with sweat from the last three hours of trudging up from the valley floor where he landed after an epic flight that brought him back into contention and on to the winners spot on the podium. Dropping his pack, he turned straight to his fellow competitor, Martin Mueller who beat him to the finish line. Mueller could not claim victory due to an airspace infringement penalty. The two athletes hugged in a superb moment of sportsmanship.Much had been written about the slim chance of Hofer making a comeback as he lagged behind in the competition, but he remained positive: "I thought I might still do it, but Coconea was always there." Coconea, was still struggling up the hillside below as Hofer finished.
Looking slightly shell-shocked at his arrival, Hofer posed for pictures with his parents before asking for food and water. A shower, a huge meal and a massage were foremost in his mind after racing over 600 miles across the Alps in the fiercest competition ever witnessed in a Red Bull X-Alps competition.
Darkness had fallen, so Hofer will fly down on Monday to claim his crown on the coast of Monaco. The 2007 Red Bull X-Alps is over, but for the teams still working toward the finish line, the emphasis will be on either making the finish or improving their final position in the race.

Alex Hofer splashed down at 10:30am on Monday August 6, 2007 in the Mediterranean to win the Red Bull X-Alps, which started the 48 hour countdown that the rest of the athletes now have to beat.
The double Red Bull X-Alps champion flew down from Mt. Gros in sunny conditions that contrasted against the rain and cold he battled through over the past two weeks.
Shortly afterward, Toma Coconea landed on the Red Bull Float off the coast of Monaco, claiming the silver amidst the cheers from the crowd.
After the long battle on the course, the Romanian athlete swam to shore and after a few interviews he could be spotted at the cabana getting some much deserved rest.
Muller finishes in 3rd Place.
At 11:00 AM on August 8, Switzerland's Martin Muller touched down on the Red Bull X-Alps raft off the coast of Monaco to claim third place in the event. The clock maker's effort can be summed up in one word: outstanding. He traded the lead with Alexander Hofer throughout the contest and ultimately arrived ahead of Hofer to log in as the fastest athlete across the two week long course.
Muller would have won had it not been for the 36 hour penalty he incurred after clipping the Sikon airspace; a devastating blow that he shouldered with admirable sportsmanship.
