Four heats, two semi's and an LCQ determined the twelve rider field for the main event.
Heat 2
The second heat race was definitely the race to watch, with may of the headliners lining up side by side.
Right out of the gate, David Pingree established a three bike length lead followed by three time supermoto champ, Jeff Ward. On the second lap, the two dropped back into the stadium with Jeff Ward right up on the back tire of Pingree. As technical as the track was, it was very hard to pass.
With just two laps to go, Ward put to use all of the time he spent following Pingree and made a smooth pass on the asphalt section. He held that spot all the way to the checkered flag.
Riding a lonely ride in fifth, Drake McElroy found himself smack dab in the middle of another practice session.
Heat 3
There is nothing more intimidating than lining up next to the reigning supermoto X Games gold medalist Mark Burkhart. Using that pressure to his benefit, Burkhart took off and never looked back.
Red Bull KTM's Chris Fillmore put his head down and wrestled with Burton for that second qualifying spot. After two laps, Burton succombed to Fillmore, who sealed the deal by pulling out a substantial lead on third.
Heat 4
Heat four proved to be some of the best racing out front for the lead. It featured a three-way battle between Red Bull's Cassidy Anderson, Kurt Nicoll, and Ben Carlson.
Kurt Nicoll took the early lead with Anderson and Carlson in tow. On lap two the lead shuffle from Carlson to Anderson and then back to Carlson after Nicoll left the door open in the asphalt section. Anderson tried insides and outsides, desparately trying to regain that top spot.
Just before white flag, Anderson was able to make a pass stick for the lead. Carlson had his hands full trying to hold off Nicoll, allowing Anderson to make a gap and walk away with the lead.
