Holeshot to the back of the pack in less than a lap, this was not Honda Red Bull rider, Davi Millsaps night.
The seventh round of the 2008 Supercross season took place at Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas. Tornado-like weather conditions threatened all day, intermittently letting loose on the pits. The second practice session raised eyebrows as Honda’s Kevin Windham posted a faster lap time than Chad Reed! Four of the top five riders clocked in a 47-second lap time in practice, setting the stage for an unbelievable night of racing.
In Supercross class heat #1, Chad Reed edged out the two Honda Red Bull riders, Davi Millsaps and Andrew Short, who took second and third respectively. Another Honda rider and practice favorite, Kevin Windham grabbed the second heat win putting Chad Reed smack dab in the middle of a Honda sandwich.
In the Lites main, Ryan Dungey lined up on the inside of the dog house and took the holeshot. In the Supercross class, Davi Millsaps chose the same spot and got the same result! Andrew Short came out of turn one in fourth. Chad Reed got buried in eighth giving Millsaps time to pull out a 1.2 second lead until he dumped the front end into turn three. The mistake would cost him as he had to restart in dead last. Chad Reed moved up quickly and by lap four he was pressuring Honda Red Bull rider Andrew Short. By lap seven, Millsaps had worked his way back into the top ten and was closing quickly on Nick Wey for ninth. Reed pulled an inside move on Short in turn seven moving him up to third. Another quick shuffle and Chad Reed moved past his teammate, Josh Hill, into second ten seconds behind Windham. Timmy Ferry got by Short, trading fifth for fourth. Davi went to work on Summey on lap 16, trying desperately to erode the eight second gap between the two. Just like Chad Reed up front, Davi Millsaps would run out of real estate before being able to make a pass for seventh. Honda’s Kevin Windham took home the win, his first on the season, with Andrew Short in fifth and Davi Millsaps in eighth.
